• What is the private copying levy?

The private copying levy (in Slovak law referred to as náhrada odmeny) is an internationally recognised form of compensation to authors and artists for private copying, derived from EU law and transposed into Slovak law through the Copyright Act. It is a legally defined payment made by manufacturers or importers of blank recording media and technical devices capable of reproducing copyright-protected works, such as musical works.

  • What are my obligations towards SOZA if I import and/or manufacture blank recording media and technical devices?

If you are a manufacturer, an intra-Community acquirer, an importer from a third country, or any other person who first places on the Slovak market — for the purpose of sale, including online sale — any of the following:

    • a technical device enabling the making of temporary or permanent copies of a work, or the storage or preservation of copies of a work, or
    • a blank recording medium enabling the storage or preservation of copies of a work,

you are obliged to submit the form "Notification on Production and Import of Blank Recording Media and Technical Devices" to SOZA on a quarterly basis, no later than the 10th day of the first month following the relevant calendar quarter (the form is available in the Forms section).
An invoice for the applicable amount of the private copying levy shall be issued and sent to you based on the completed form and in accordance with the Copyright Act.
